A patient who has been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may not respond to stimulant therapy, or they may have other reasons that they would prefer a different option. In recent years, new, non-stimulant medications have been approved for the treatment of both ADD and ADHD. If the patient has issues with heart disease, drug abuse, or psychosis, non-stimulant prescription medication will be tried in most cases.
Atomoxetine, also known as Strattera, is the most well-known non-stimulant medication used to treat ADD or ADHD. This drug takes up to six weeks to provide results, while most stimulants are effective within a few days. There are a few side effects that many people experience including abdominal discomfort. In a very few number of ADD or ADHD patients, severe liver problems have been seen. Some patients experience relief of their symptoms with no side effects at all.
Guanfacine, also known as Tenex and Intuniv, is another non-stimulant treatment for ADD and ADHD symptoms. Tenex is a short-acting version, while Intuniv is a newer, long-acting medication. These medications are also used to treat high blood pressure. It has a sedative property that is useful to help ADD patients sleep well and can also treat hyperactivity.
Bupropion, also known as Wellbutrin, is an anti-depressant medication that can have a beneficial effect on ADD symptoms. The effects are milder when compared to other medication options. Many people without ADD or ADHD report that Wellbutrin has a mild stimulant property and help relieve the energy-draining symptoms of general depression. If an ADD or ADHD patient has depression as well, this could be a good option to try.
Some ADD and ADHD patients are prescribed modafanil which goes by the brand name of Provigil or armodafanil which goes by the brand name of Nuvigil. They are primarily used because they have some mild stimulating properties, but aren’t considered true stimulants. People without ADD or ADHD who have excessive sleepiness are often prescribed one of these drugs. They do not have much effect on ADD’s cognitive or behavioral symptoms.
