You may have heard that fruits and vegetables are essential to keep your body healthy and fit. They provide you with plenty of vitamins and fiber along with a dose of carbohydrates and proteins when taken. They are also low in fat which makes them an ideal food for those worried about heart diseases. They are very nutritious and healthy, and so is the best choice you can ever make.

After hearing all these praises you may be tempted to go to the grocery and buy plenty of vegetables and fruits, but wait that is not all. Did you know that the fruits and vegetables you get in the market are riddled with pesticides, insecticides and other chemicals to preserve it and keep it clean? Or have you though about the hormones that is injected into them so that they mature quickly?

Most of the producers of fruits and vegetables use plenty of pesticides and insecticides on their produce to keep them away from the attack of pesticides. They don’t bother cleaning up after the mess but you have to be bothered about it because these chemicals are quite poisonous. So whenever you buy some fruit or vegetable, be sure to wash it carefully.

Some fruits and vegetables are injected with hormones to make them mature quickly. This is so that the demand for the particular item can be met easily. It is not just the fruits and vegetables, some chicks and ducklings too are injected with the hormones responsible for the growth of the body. This is why some boys have female characteristics developing on them.

So you can see that the world you live in is not exactly a perfect one. It has all the flaws you can think of. Choose wisely and eat healthy whenever possible so that you can lead a very healthy life.

Realizing There is Someone Else in There

Al Murray's Multiple Personality Disorder
Image via Wikipedia

When a person has Multiple Personality Disorder, they may not have any clue that it has happened in the first place. As a general rule, the MPD individual does not start out their life having two personalities. And for all too many of them, it actually has to come as a realization that there really are two people who are suddenly sharing both the same body and the same life with one another. In this case, the person may even have two full time jobs, because each personality no Earthly clue that the other one even exists. Then one day, one of the jobs calls, and the person who works there is not active at the moment. This can be quite a shock to one’s system.

Now, at this point a lot of MPD individuals will begin to crack a bit. After all, it can be extremely difficult for two people to get along well with one another. In fact, most of the general public’s perception that MPD individuals are all completely insane stems from the fact that in many cases, what one of the personalities wants flies right in the face of the personal ethics and desires of the other (or at least one other) personality. To have a civil war in one’s own mind definitely poses a problem with getting anything substantial done in life.

Fortunately, many times MPD people can actually live reasonably healthy, constructive lives, in spite of the fact that it is an unusual sort of compromise that they have to strike within themselves. After all, we all have conflicting desires from time to time. The main difference is that for the most part, we are the supreme dictator of our own lives, whereas an MPD person has to sort things out with a sort of “congress” inside of themselves. While this is definitely a bizarre situation for those of us on the outside, just imagine how they must feel.

Mental Health Days

A lot of people have taken to the concept of taking a “mental health day” when they just do not feel like working. There are two schools of thought, when it comes to taking a day off when nothing is physically wrong and there are no overriding tasks to be done. Some people believe that this entire process is indicative of being lazy. And in contrast to this, some people really do think that taking a day off every so often can be good for your mental health. It is very possible that both of these opinions can be correct. The main difference would seem to be the individual’s mental relationship to the work which they do. For some, work is more sanity inducing than it is for others.

For some people, work is nothing but drudgery. Often these people are the proletariat, and the work they do is boring and dehumanizing for them. To a person who is in that kind of a situation, taking a day off (assuming that you can afford to do so) is a good idea, as they will most likely be doing a similar kind of job for the rest of their natural life. If you hate the work that you do, then a mental health day makes perfect sense for you to take. To remain sane, you might need to do something enjoyable for a change.

However, if you really do love the work that you do, it would make absolutely no sense for you to take a mental health day. For many people who enjoy their work, they will even go in when they are not feeling physically well. And while doing things like that can end up being counterproductive, a mental health day for someone who loves to do their work just makes no sense at all. Perhaps the best sort of mental health day that you can take is one in which you accomplish something.

Eat Well, Live Well

Much like sleep, diet can have a profound impact on one’s physical and mental well-being. This isn’t to say that all issues can be solved by eating vegetables, but it is the case that the choice of food is relevant. “You are what you eat” is not a meaningless phrase. People who consume a lot of unhealthy foods – which offer a huge amount of very specific nutrients and fatty products – miss out on many vitamins and minerals offered by a properly balanced diet; the body’s cry out against the lack of these nutrients can manifest itself both physically and mentally. Sometimes the only thing required to combat depression might be a banana. This isn’t always true, but it’s true more often than people might think.

With so much of one’s mental health being dependent upon the care one takes of one’s body – whether it is in the amount of sleep or exercise one gets or the balance of the diet or some other factor – it’s easy to look at the growing number of diagnosed cases of mental illness (whether depression or something else) and wonder how much of it could be easily prevented by smarter choices and more discipline. It’s a bit of a cliché that Americans are fat and lazy, yet there is some truth in the idea that there is a focus today on a more sedentary lifestyle, one which does require less strenuous work but which also does much less to maintain the body and the mind.

Today’s culture seems to be one of pill-popping and shrink-seeing. If you have a problem, there’s a doctor who can help you and probably prescribe medication for you. While it is the case that medicine can work many wonders against diseases that otherwise would wreak havoc, it’s too easy to slip over the line and develop an over-reliance on medication to solve problems that could be addressed in other ways.

Organization Skills for Adult ADD/ADHD

a salute to finals!
Image by Alex Dodd via Flickr
While many people could use some pointers about how to stay organized and add structure to their lives, those with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can greatly improve their quality of life if they can learn to maintain order. Everything seems a little bit easier when items are in their place. For many people, order also brings a sense of peace and well-being. Somehow, the outside structure brings a little inner organization as well.

While they usually need some help to get started, learning neat habits can help those with ADD or ADHD symptoms to get organized and stay that way. Start off by discarding any items that aren’t needed and categorizing the rest. Once everything is in its place, make it a habit to maintain that order by returning everything after use. Every evening or every morning, walk through the house and put things back in their place. Most people find that it’s much easier to maintain order than to start over after things are out of control.

It may be helpful for the person with ADD or ADHD to write a list of things that have to be done so that they can concentrate on one area or task at a time. Otherwise, it can easily become overwhelming, or they may skip from task to task without completing anything. Lists can also help people to deal with things now instead of procrastinating and putting things off forever.

Paperwork can be one of the hardest items to organize for people with ADD or ADHD. It can be hard to know what to keep and what to throw away. This often results in stacks of paper all around the house. When something must be found, it’s an almost impossible task. Many people with ADD find that the use of a color coded filing system helps. As with any other clutter, if items are dealt with and filed as soon as they come in, it is much easier to maintain.

Self-Help for Adult ADD

While most experts agree that professional treatment is the best option for attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), there are certain practices that anyone can use to improve their quality of life. These habits will be of help to anyone, but they are particularly beneficial to someone with ADD or ADHD. Most of these techniques are so easy that anyone can take advantage of them.

Everyone, but especially those with ADD or ADHD, should get plenty of exercise and spend some time outdoors. Exercise is a great stress reliever and mood booster, plus it burns off excess energy and promotes a good night’s sleep. If a fun activity is chosen, it will be easier to stick with the program. Many people find that being outdoors is a good way to relax and let go of the day’s problems. This seems to be especially true for people with ADD and ADHD.

Along with exercise, it’s important to get a good night’s sleep. Many people who have ADD or ADHD symptoms don’t sleep well even if they don’t have an actual sleep disorder. Everyone should avoid caffeine late in the day and create a predictable bed-time routine. A hot shower or warm bath before bedtime can also help many people get to sleep sooner. A regular wake-up time, even on the weekends, can also help establish a stable sleeping pattern.

While a healthy diet is good for everyone, it can greatly improve some ADD and ADHD symptoms. Stable blood sugar from frequent, small meals can improve concentration and reduce irritability. Preventing hunger or compulsive eating can control weight gain, low moods, and distraction. ADD and ADHD patients should avoid sugar, lower their overall carbohydrate consumption, and increase their protein intake.

People with ADD or ADHD should take time each day to relax and unwind. Meditation, yoga, and tai chi can help the participant to be more mindful and attentive. These techniques can also increase emotional awareness and help control impulses. Again, these practices can help anyone, but work particularly well for those with ADD and ADHD.
